Regarding your second question, the procedure is quite simple once you allow the installation of fonts using a shortcut (Font Folder -> Font settings -> Installation settings, then OK ), you can right click on the Font File you wish to install by shortcut, and then select the option “Install by shortcut”. Right now the only way you have to shorten the Word Font List is by uninstalling the fonts you don’t want from the system. There is not plan to change this functionality for Windows 7, anyhow, it is under consideration for future releases of Windows. You are right, the purpose of the “Hide” functionality in Windows 7 is to make the “hidden” fonts not visible to applications, thought by the moment this functionality just apply for the applications shipped on Windows 7, or applications that uses the font selection UI box (The one used by Notepad or Paint).
